Painted plates and glasses may be best kept as decorations – for more reasons than one

Painted dishes make for lovely dining room décor, they can perk up the shelves in a dining room, and add flair to see-through kitchen cabinets.

Not only that, but they can be exquisite for dinner parties. But before you dust off your fine collectible tableware, you might think twice before serving on them, and not just because they might get broken.

Experts are finding that there is a high lead content on many painted plates and glasses. Lead can be dangerous, especially for children, just a small amount can have adverse effects on the brain and may lead to learning problems late in life.

HOW TO ENSURE THAT YOUR TABLEWARE DOESN'T CONTAIN LEAD

Sometimes it’s simple enough as looking on the bottom of the dish, some manufacturers will post a lead content warning, but some don’t. If you want to be extra safe, you can purchase a lead swab and do your own testing. Another thing you can do is wash your dishes well before eating off of them, this way, any type of lead dust that might be on the tableware will be removed.
