Make your Christmas tree sparkle with unique handmade glass blown ornamentsThe snow is falling, and inside it's warm and the Christmas lights are glowing. If you really want to make your tree unique and sparkling at the same time, consider decorating with blown glass ornaments, their illuminating effect is simply stunning. GERMANS INTRODUCE THE FIRST GLASS ORNAMENTS Early Christmas trees were generally decorated with candles, paper ornaments (what a combination!), fruit, popcorn chains, raisins, cookies, and candy... then the first glass ornaments appeared in Germany. The exact origin of the glass ornament is sketchy, but during the 1500's, it is said that Germans in northern Bohemia had learned glass blowing skills from wandering Venetian traders, and created glass decorations to adorn the fir tree for the winter solstice festival, then Christians began decorating trees with glass ornaments to celebrate the birth of Christ. Somewhere during the 1800's, a glassblower in Lauscha East Germany made some small glass balls for his family Christmas tree. A demand grew for these glass balls, and by 1880, glassblowers in Lauscha had thousands of orders for them. Then in 1880, F.W. Woolworth brought these German ornaments to the U.S. Since then, glass ornaments have adorned trees most everywhere where Christmas is celebrated. Today there is a rise in glassblowing and gorgeous handmade ornaments are readily available, and these keepsakes are a lovely way to add a special touch to the Christmas season. |
