Glass etching: An ancient craft made easierGlass etching is an ancient technique used to decorate glass objects. There have been different methods used to etch glass over the years, including acid etching, sand-etching, and etching using cream, and some much safer than others. ACID ETCHING Until recently, many craftsmen would place a wax resist stencil over the glass, then apply hydrofluoric acid over the stencil/glass, but this is not recommended because the combination of the glass and acid puts off extremely poisonous fumes. SAND ETCHING Another type of etching commonly done is sand-etching; this is the use of sand or glass blasted at the substrate with compressed air. This method often renders higher quality etching, but it too can be dangerous as small particles of dust cause lung disease. USING ETCHING CREAM: THE SAFE ALTERNATIVE This is why today, many crafters use etching cream applied over a stencil or cut contact paper to create their own etchings. To do this, one needs to be prepared with the proper supplies and steps, these supplies usually include window cleaner to clean the glass, contact paper or a stencil, a utility knife, latex gloves, etching cream, and more depending on the exact project. Make sure you follow the directions given on your particular glass craft products. And always make sure to wear safety goggles and take other safety precautions. Whether you buy a piece of etched glass, or make your own personalized item, these items have been admired over hundreds of years, and can be lovely additions to your home décor, as well as make delightful and lasting gifts. |
