Fused Glass: Getting Creative with Glass!
What is fused glass? It is a specialized kind of glass created through fusion of small glass bars by heating on a kiln. Come let me introduce you through this article about what it is, how is it made and what are its uses?
How is it made?
- The first and foremost step is to get the glass materials specifically designed for fusing. They must be initially tested for compatibility. This is because if they have different rates of expansion, the glasses may crack. So the right choice of material is very important. Bulls-eye glass is the best option for glass fusion. It comes in an array of fusible colors compatible to each other.
- Next get your fusing tools, glasscutter, kiln, shelf, pliers, molds etc ready. As it involves high temperature, proper ventilation is very essential. Don’t forget to wear the safety glass. Always keep all the safety equipments handy.
- Once you have selected the material, cut and arrange them in a stack on the kiln shelf. Put a coat of kiln wash before starting the process. Now place the whole stack on the kiln for proper heating. The usual temperature is 1500 degrees Fahrenheit or 250 degrees for an hour heating. You have to be very careful with the temperature setting. It is a vital factor in the fusion process.
- Usually the glass bars used are ¼ inches in thickness to prevent shrinkage.
- With optimum temperature the glass pieces will gradually melt down to fuse as a single piece. Now start the cooling process.
Once the heating and cooling are over, you have to bend and shape the fused material into the final cast. This process is called slumping. Put the fused glass into a mold. Heat it in the kiln for about 1200 degrees Fahrenheit. Here comes your finished product. You can create quite fascinating and intricate designs with the fused glass.
Uses:
Fused glass is used in making decorative bowls, platters, vessels, wind chimes and various forms of mosaics. There are endless possibilities for decorative ideas with this glass form.
But in jewelry making, fused glass is just an emerging trend. You can make pendants, bracelets, earrings, rings and lots more with this glass.
If you want to be extremely creative, make your own fused glass jewelry. But be prepared to cut a big chunk of your pocket money, as it is an expensive process.
